5 Drinks That May Have More Antioxidants Than Green Tea

5 Drinks That May Have More Antioxidants Than Green Tea

Green tea has earned a strong reputation as one of the healthiest drinks because it contains catechins, including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). But green tea is not the only beverage rich in beneficial plant compounds. Several other drinks, including coffee, berry juice, hibiscus tea and pomegranate juice, can provide significant amounts of antioxidants.

Recent nutrition coverage highlights five drinks that can offer particularly strong antioxidant profiles: coffee, berry juice, hibiscus tea, pomegranate juice and pure hot cocoa. However, antioxidant measurements can vary considerably depending on the drink, preparation method and serving size, so it is better to focus on dietary variety rather than declaring one beverage universally superior.

1. Coffee

For many people, coffee is an important source of dietary polyphenols. Coffee contains compounds such as chlorogenic acids, which have antioxidant properties.

Interestingly, an analysis of more than 3,100 foods and beverages found that prepared coffee can have a substantial antioxidant content, although values vary by preparation method.

The healthiest choice is generally plain coffee without large amounts of added sugar or high-calorie syrups.

2. Berry Juice

Juices made from berries such as blueberries, maqui and acai can provide anthocyanins and other polyphenols. These plant compounds are responsible for many of the deep red, purple and blue colours found in berries.

When choosing berry juice, look for products with little or no added sugar. Whole berries are also an excellent option because they provide fibre that is largely removed during juicing.

3. Hibiscus Tea

Hibiscus tea is a colourful, caffeine-free beverage made by steeping hibiscus flowers. Its deep red colour comes from plant compounds, including polyphenols.

Research has investigated hibiscus for potential cardiovascular effects, although more research is needed to establish how drinking hibiscus tea affects long-term health outcomes.

4. Pomegranate Juice

Earlier laboratory comparisons found pomegranate juice had greater antioxidant capacity than green tea and red wine in several testing methods.

For a healthier choice, select 100% pomegranate juice without added sugar and keep portions moderate.

5. Hot Cocoa

Pure cocoa can also be a useful source of flavanols, plant compounds associated with antioxidant activity. However, the nutritional quality of hot cocoa depends heavily on how it is prepared.

A drink made with minimally processed, unsweetened cocoa is very different from a commercial hot-chocolate beverage loaded with sugar and cream.

Why Antioxidant Variety Matters

Rather than trying to find one "super drink", nutrition experts recommend consuming a broad range of plant foods. Colourful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds can provide many different polyphenols and other beneficial compounds.

The important message is that green tea does not have to be your only source of antioxidants. Coffee, berry-based drinks, hibiscus tea, pomegranate juice and unsweetened cocoa can all add variety to a balanced diet.
